Holly Branch Delaware, NLAPW: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow

The Holly Branch, NLAPW, is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, which consists of over 100  branches in the USA and Panama.

LOCATION:  Although our Branches have no borders, The Holly Branch extends from Kent County Delaware west to our sister branch in Chestertown, Md, north to our sister Branch (Diamond State) in New Castle County and Southern PA. Our closest branch south is the Chesapeake Branch in the Virginia Beach/Williamsburg area.

MISSION:
Our mission is to encourage, recognize and promote the production of creative work of professional standard in visual arts, writing and music of women.  We conduct public meetings, lectures, workshops, contests, exhibitions and various art venues throughout Counties of Kent & Sussex Delaware to explore, share and promote professional talents in bringing greater awareness of the value of the arts throughout our area.  Meetings are held regularly.

Visual Artists

HISTORY:

In March of 1972 a small group of writers and artists initiated the Holly Branch:  Eugenia Gray, Isabel Kast, Barbara Miller, Elaine Mitchell, Harriet Myer and Ann Sparklin.  During the 1970's other artists became members such as Coreyelle Ayers, Alice Purvis, Delores Sapienza, Helen Duff-Thompson, Martha Smith and Kitty Hammond.   Since that time the Holly Branch has continued on as a group of professional female artists in Kent and Sussex Counties Delaware dedicated to bringing art related opportunities and events to members, invited guests and the community.

Within the past two years this branch has organized three major juried and judged art exhibition which includes visual and literary arts.  The latest exhibit "Historic Delmarva" was open to all male and female artists.  In addition, through a partnership with Kent County Library, literary events have provided a venue for local poets and writers as well as featured writers including Delaware's Poet Laureate, Joanne Balingit. Holly Branch, American Pen Women, is starting a new era today by initiating this blog.  I believe we are doing away with the web site to enable a less stressful way to provide information, images and events without the financial burden.

Pat is currently involved with The Children's Theatre, Inc. of Dover & Kent County Delaware of which she is a board member and Artistic Director.  She has been involved with the non-profit theatre group since 1997.  She started helping out by just doing makeup and hair for the theatre, when her daughter joined the theatre group when she was eight years old.  She enjoyed being a part of such a community oriented and nurturing group of all volunteer members which lead to her to be a makeup artist and soon became a board member.  She became interested in directing after assisting on three main stage productions. Since that time she has directed many plays.  She  wrote an original main stage play which was performed by the children of our theatre group, on stage at Wells Theatre, Wesley College and The Schwartz Center for the Arts in April of 2008 (The "Oh, So, True" Tale of Hansel and Gretel, The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood".    In 2009, My daughter, Kathleen and I directed local playwright, Jim Rogin's adaptation of "Cinderella".  I adapted his version of the play to include more characters for our April 2009 production.
